ABOUT US

The Glucksman Gallery is a cultural and educational institution that promotes the research, creation and exploration of the visual arts. The Glucksman is a purpose-built museum on the campus of University College Cork, Ireland that comprises over 2000m² and includes display spaces with international curatorial standard environmental controls, lecture facilities, a gift shop and a riverside restaurant.

HISTORY

The Glucksman was opened by Mary McAleese, President of Ireland, on 14 October 2004. The museum is named in honour of Dr Lewis Glucksman who was a successful investment banker and renowned philanthropist. Together with his wife, Dr. Loretta Brennan Glucksman, he generously supported cultural and educational projects in Ireland and the US. Dr. Loretta Brennan Glucksman is currently the Honorary Patron of the gallery.

ARCHITECTURE

The Glucksman was designed by Irish architects, O’Donnell + Tuomey. The gallery has won numerous awards including RIAI Best Public Building, a UK Civic Trust award, a RIBA award, the shortlist for the Stirling Prize as well as being named as one of the 1001 buildings to see before you die. “The building sits in a key position close to the entrance of University College Cork. On two sides it has a civic role in addressing the university and city beyond, on the other two a completely different, almost picturesque role, in settling into an important mature landscape. That the building handles this difficult tension with apparent ease is the first mark of the incredible skill that the architects have brought to it” RIBA Judges statement

The Glucksman presents three artistic seasons each year. Each season presents new exhibitions, events and education programmes to engage visitors of diverse interests and experience. The Glucksman's artistic mission is to explore all aspects of visual culture and present a range of innovative and intellectually stimulating displays.
